Frequently asked questions

How is HRA exemption calculated?

HRA exemption is the least of: (1) actual HRA received, (2) rent paid minus 10% of basic salary plus DA, and (3) 50% of basic for metro cities or 40% for non-metro cities. This calculator works out all three and picks the lowest.

Can I claim HRA in the new tax regime?

No. The HRA exemption under Section 10(13A) is available only under the old tax regime. If you opt for the new regime, you cannot claim HRA exemption.
